Description
The Autonomous Monastic State of Mount Athos (comp.: Mount Athos) is a self-governing part of the Greek State, located on the Athos peninsula of Halkidiki, in Macedonia. It includes 20 Holy Monasteries, their accessories and various shops and services. Its status and mode of operation are determined in detail, parallel to the Constitution of Greece, by the Charter of Mount Athos (K.H.A.O.) of May 10, 1924.
Since 1988 it has been included in the list of World Heritage Sites.
